Milpitas is at the heart of Silicon Valley and is often called the “Crossroads of Silicon Valley” with most of its 13.63 square miles of land situated between two major freeways (I-880 and I-680), State Route 237, and a County expressway. With existing light rail and BART extension opening in 2020, the transit hub adjacent to the Great Mall facilitated high density transit-oriented development with over 2,100 units being built. There are approximately 1,790 acres, or 2.9 square miles designated for various industrial uses.
An additional 350 acres are dedicated to regional and community retail centers supporting 3.5 million square feet of commercial shops. The Great Mall of the Bay Area is the largest enclosed mall in Northern California, with approximately 1.1 million square feet of leasable space for retail and entertainment operations. Several local shopping centers service regional needs including Asian-oriented retail and services. Incorporated in 1954, the City of Milpitas is a bustling general-law city supervised by a council-manager form of government. Milpitas is a full-service city which includes Police, Fire, and a water utility and sewer utility. The City of Milpitas Recreation and Community Services seeks enthusiastic individuals for part-time Administrative Assistant for Recreation Programs at the Milpitas Community Center, Senior Center and/or Sports Center.
Must be able to work between 6:00am-9:00pm Monday through Fridays; Saturdays, 7:00am-2:00pm; 20 - 25 hours/week and limited to 980 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). You may be required to work, nights, weekends, and holidays. Actual work schedule to be determined through agreement with supervisor.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Under direct supervision of a Recreation Services Supervisor, Administrative Assistants will:
• Answer phone and email inquiries related to Recreation programs
• Assist with filing and various office related projects
• Assist with light cleaning in the fitness rooms, locker rooms and gym
• Have knowledge of ActiveNet Software for program registration, and memberships
• Assist with facility and park rentals, assist with customer inquiries and concerns and other related duties
• Set up adult sports drop in equipment (basketball nets, volleyball nets, pickle ball)
The essential functions of this position include:
• Maintaining a professional front desk environment
• Acting immediately and appropriately to ensure customer satisfaction
• Performing various cleaning and maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility
• Preparing and maintaining reports
• Understanding and enforcing of facility rules, policies and procedures, demonstrating leadership, public relations and decision-making skills
• The individual must be able to represent the City of Milpitas Recreation and Community Services in a professional manner and follow the City's and Recreation and Community Services' policies and regulations
Experience and Education
• Minimum age at time of hire is 18 years old.
• Ability to work independently and possess energy and enthusiasm.
• Must have one year experience of clerical or customer service experience.
• Must have current certification in American Red Cross Community, CPR, First Aid and AED Training, or within 60 days of hire date
License and Other Requirements
Upon selection, additional requirements include:
• Fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice background check) if 18 years or older

City of Milpitas Temporary/ Seasonal Employee* Benefits at a Glance
Federal law requires that employees who are not members of the City retirement plan (CalPERS) be covered under an alternate retirement plan (PARS).
6% of your salary will be deducted for participation in the PARS plan. The City will also contribute 1.5% of your earnings to your PARS account every pay period.
Temporary /Seasonal employees may contribute pre-tax dollars to a 457 Deferred Compensation Plan administered by ICMARC. This plan allows you to invest in your future by building a retirement savings account using payroll deductions that go into investments you select from the diverse fund lineup.
Paid Time Off
In accordance with State Law, after 90 days, Temporary/Seasonal employees receive 24 hours to use for sick leave.

Health Insurance (Not available to most Temporary/Seasonal Employees)
Temporary employees in a non-clerical position hired in the Planning, Engineering and Building Divisions may qualify for participation in CalPERS health, Delta Dental and Vision. (per Res. 7062) o Multiple plans available through CalPERS Health; plans with Kaiser rate or lower are paid by the City.
