Additional Information: In accordance with Governor Jay Inslee's announced Proclamation 21-14.1 on August 18, 2021, all K-12 school district employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 18, 2021. Candidates who are extended a conditional offer of employment with Tacoma Public Schools will be required to submit proof of vaccination status in compliance with Governor Inslee's mandate, prior to official hire with the district. This position performs duties designed to maximize and unify Business Intelligence (BI) capabilities; manages assigned staff, develops, supports, and implements BI solutions; applies business intelligence across the enterprise using business analytics tools to analyze data and share insights; builds new solutions for reporting and analytics; gathers and analyzes business requirements; plans, prepares, implements, and delivers end-to-end solutions to meet District objectives.


  1. Lead, supervise, and evaluate BI, Data, and Reporting staff to achieve the mission of the department and district
  2. Serves as the lead and primary liaison for data and reporting across the district, including but not limited to the data warehouse, Power BI, district reporting, and data standards. Is the "go-to" person for staff and departments across the district for any data and reporting issues or projects.
  3. Working with the Director of Data & Application Development, leads training and professional development to ensure that staff are informed and trained in their roles.
  4. Develops scalable and maintainable BI applications to meet business objectives and to transform data into knowledge supporting data-informed decision making; works together with administrators and customers to identify and scope their business opportunities.
  5. Maintains, supports, and enhances the enterprise data warehouse and its constituent star-schema/dimensional model data marts; is responsible for data integrity as well as the quality of data; identifies root cause problems in data quality and collaborates with technology and other staff to develop plans to avoid or mitigate data quality issues
  6. Participates in the development and implementation of security and authentication standards for the organization.
  7. Manage and balance work priorities to ensure the department delivers what is expected of it
  8. Maintains accurate and complete technical architectural documents and data validation methods.
  9. Defines BI standards, guidelines, and best practices for business groups and technical teams.
  10. Supports BI tools upgrades in development, testing, and documentation.
  11. Performs maintenance and troubleshooting activities for BI tools.
  12. Diagnoses and resolves BI tool capacity issues with a strong aptitude for modern BI solution development using Power BI, Azure, and SQL Server.
  13. Recommends strategies to improve performance and capacity of BI tools for current and future data.
  14. Addresses customer queries and issues promptly; provides analytic support to the application and/or data source; delivers end-user analytics issue troubleshooting, performance improvements, and support.
  15. Provides BI administration and technical support during weekends, after-hours, and holidays, when needed.
  16. Provides technical training on BI tools to junior staff; develops end-user training, training materials, and provides guidance and mentoring for the District staff, as needed.
  17. Leads BI Administrators, Developers, Analysts, and other essential staff in the successful development of BI reporting and analysis solutions; promotes data and analytic goals with technology resources, infrastructure, and other service areas.
  18. Collaborates with business groups and technical teams to develop and maintain the data warehouse platform for BI reporting in a way that meets end-user business needs.

  1. Maintains and updates knowledge and skills required for success in the position by participating in professional development activities as needed or assigned.
  2. Assists appropriate department staff during peak workloads and absences; provides backup assistance for other technical support staff for special projects when assigned.
  3. Performs related duties as assigned, temporarily.

Experiences frequent interruptions; exposed to video display; may work in confined areas; may be required to work extended and/or irregular hours; required to travel to District sites; exposed to confidential information; required to bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, climb, and/or be mobile, and lift 20 pounds and team move/lift heavy objects up to 60 pounds.

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, mathematics or related field; five years of experience with business intelligence solution development and data warehousing; experience with Power BI, including DAX and data modeling, data mart and data warehouse architecture; professional experience with Azure data/analytics platforms; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge skills and ability required to perform the work.

Licenses/Special Requirements
Valid Washington driver's license with access to personal transportation.
Proof of training and/or certification, required, if applicable.
Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.

Knowledge of Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) product in a development role.
