Transportation Design is responsible for advancing projects from planning level recommendations through the design development phase. This group has direct coordination with local communities on projects and neighborhood transportation issues. This collaboration strengthens the City's efforts to be responsive to all neighborhoods, regardless of zip code or geographical area.

The Transportation Design team is seeking to fill several Engineer positions within different disciplines. We are looking for engineers with experience in transportation and/or traffic engineering design, including the design and implementation of mobility and safety projects. These positions represent a special opportunity to be a part of the team designing and implementing several innovative multimodal programs including Elevate Denver Bond, Denver Moves Bicycles, Vision Zero, Denver Moves Pedestrians, and Denver Moves Transit.

Each project will allow you to expand and sharpen your design skills while contributing to the larger community. Our team works with other City departments, design consultants, community stakeholders, and outside agencies to design and implement projects.

One of the positions is limited position with an expected end date of December 1, 2023.

As a key member of the Design team, you will be responsible for:

  • Managing transportation design projects that will involve our programs including Vision Zero, Transit, Bicycle, Pedestrian, Neighborhood Transportation Management and Traffic Signals
  • Mentorship opportunities to work with junior staff and interns as well as cross-departmental coordination with Planning, Construction, Plan Review, Operations and Maintenance staff
  • Designing and assisting in implementation of all types of transportation projects including pedestrian safety, bikeways, transit ways, traffic signals, traffic operations and other projects
  • Coordinating with contractors and operations staff on the installation of transportation projects
  • Reviewing requests and concerns related to projects received from various stakeholders including members of the community, city council, and other departments and provide recommendations for improvements to senior staff and management
  • Communicating with city council, constituents, Denver Police and other community members
  • Managing design project task order contracts and reviewing deliverables from consultants
  • Investigating, reviewing, and creating designs that address issues identified from constituent transportation inquiries; using relevant design guidelines and policies to support response and inquiry resolution
  • Performing occasional after-hours work for community meetings, special events support, and field observations

About You

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Project management experience
  • Experience with transportation engineering design including intersection geometric designs, pavement marking layouts, traffic control signs, and traffic signal design and operations
  • Experience reviewing and/or preparing plans and traffic impact studies
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering best practices using current design guides and manuals
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret and draw conclusions from a variety of data sources including but not limited to crash reports, traffic volumes, traffic speeds and other geo-spatial data sets
  • The ability to communicate with a variety of stakeholders, community members and agency partners
  • Experience creating designs in AutoCAD or other design software

Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

Experience Requirement: Four (4) years' experience as an entry level Engineer

License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at time of application.

Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application

Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation

Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment

Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements
