Remote (35) Full time Posted Yesterday JR266 Position Summary Reporting to the Senior Vice President Audubon Americas, the Science Director will be responsible to structure the science agenda with an end focus on bird and habitat conservation for Audubon Americas. The Director will structure and guide the science needed to set the impact goals, define strategies and monitor progress as part of Flight Plan. This work will be done in close partnership with the Science team, including the Migratory Bird Initiative (MBI), Conservation Science, Metrics and Monitoring, Climate Science, and Community Science teams. This position works as the liaison between Science and the science work needed by Audubon Americas. The Director will select specific areas of science innovation in partnership with the VP Conservation for Audubon Americas, which Audubon will lead and broker. They will coordinate and leverage other science expertise in Audubon and define an external science partnership agenda to support the Audubon America’s conservation work. The Director will continue to position Audubon as the leading bird conservation organization in the Americas, based on solid science. This position will grow the science work and team on bird conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean and work in close partnership with the Boreal Program. As a key staff member of Audubon Americas, the Director will have the opportunity to work alongside several senior staff members, including the VP for Conservation and country program directors, and play a role in helping the Audubon Americas grow in the hemisphere. Compensation: $85,000-$95,000/year = National $95,000-$105,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY $105,000-$115,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle Essential Functions Impact goal setting and monitor progress In close partnership with the Science team and embedded in Flight Plan, provide the best science available to define and reach 2028 goals for hemispheric bird conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean and Boreal program. Provide solid science support for strategy development to the VP Conservation Americas. Together, define 2028 impact goals and support, in partnership with Conservation Science, Audubon Americas dashboard that reports progress in a quarterly basis. Define Audubon’s direct and indirect contributions. Ensure the dashboard is aligned with the new organization-wide dashboard under design. Structure a system to monitor impact in a transparent and cost efficient way in partnership with Metrics and Monitoring team. Define with MBI leads how this Initiative will further support the Audubon Americas’ science agenda and how Audubon Americas can leverage MBI in the region. Partner with Climate Science leads to extend relevant avian climate science across the hemisphere. Science support for conservation Assist technical staff with science advice and guidance. Analytical work as needed, skills in GIS a plus. Support staff and partners in publishing existing work and future work. Support the science behind policy reforms necessary for scalable bird conservation. Support writing proposals and fundraising assignments for Audubon Americas’ conservation and science work. Represent Audubon in key science settings and agendas in Latin America and the Caribbean. Innovation Define one (or two at the most) area of science innovation on bird conservation and structure a long-term vision and program that will continue positioning Audubon as a leading science organization. Fundraise and structure a science team to crystalize this area of innovation. Teams and internal and external partnerships Structure the vision of a science team for Audubon Americas. What skills Audubon will develop internally “build”, what skill to “borrow” via strategic partnerships and what skills to “buy” from consultants. And support its development. Identify, develop and mature the partnerships with strategic science partners. Develop the right science team for Audubon Americas that will lead the innovation work and those that will support the science work. Leverage the organization’s science team and avoid duplication of efforts. Be the liaison for the MBI and the Audubon science team more broadly. Leverage and support this Initiative and others (e.g. climate science) in Latin America and the Caribbean. Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work. Other job-related duties as assigned. Qualifications and Experience Master's and/or PHD Degree in biology, ecology or other relevant field required. Anequivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. 10+ years of experience in science and conservation work required. Bird conservation work and experience is essential. Extensive experience in applied science and conservation work in Latin America and the Caribbean required. Track record on scientific publications. Relevant areas of expertise include: bird population studies, spatial conservation planning, and ecosystem services valuation. Must be bilingual in English and Spanish. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus. Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Detail-oriented, self-starter with the ability to take initiative, manage multiple priorities, while working in a fast-paced dynamic environment and keeping deadlines and maintaining complete and accurate documentation. Individual should be a good communicator and feel comfortable working independently and taking full responsibility for the completion of tasks as a key member of the team. Team management experience.
